Avelo Airlines is adding another round of leisure-focused routes for late 2026, a move that gives several secondary U.S. airports more nonstop options just as travelers keep looking for lower fares and simpler airport experiences.
The airline announced on June 24 that it will add nonstop service from Tweed-New Haven Airport to Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, shift its New Haven-Houston operation from Hobby Airport to George Bush Intercontinental Airport, and launch three new Concord/Charlotte routes to Florida. Avelo's current new-routes page also lists a new Lakeland-Aguadilla link, creating two fresh mainland U.S. gateways to Puerto Rico's west coast.
For U.S. travelers, the significance is not just the number of routes. Avelo is using smaller or alternative airports such as New Haven, Lakeland and Concord-Padgett Regional Airport to compete for travelers who might otherwise drive to larger hubs. That strategy can change the real cost of a trip by reducing airport drive time, parking stress and connection risk, even when base fares are only part of the final travel budget.
What Avelo Is Adding
The most notable destination addition is Aguadilla, served by Rafael Hernandez Airport on Puerto Rico's northwest coast. Avelo said its New Haven-Aguadilla flights will begin November 19, 2026, with twice-weekly service on Thursdays and Sundays using Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft. Introductory one-way fares on the route start at $119, according to the airline, with the usual limits on seats, dates and optional fees.
Avelo also said it will begin serving Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport from New Haven on September 21, 2026, replacing its previous Houston Hobby service. The IAH flights are scheduled twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays. The change matters because Bush Intercontinental can be more convenient for parts of north Houston and for travelers connecting ground transportation around the city's larger northern business and residential corridors. Avelo is also adding three Concord/Charlotte-to-Florida routes. The airline said flights from Concord-Padgett Regional Airport to Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers will begin November 19 with twice-weekly Thursday and Sunday service. Concord-to-Orlando service is scheduled to start November 18 and operate four days per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Concord-to-Tampa service is scheduled to begin November 20 with twice-weekly Monday and Friday flights. Avelo said fares from Concord start at $49 on eligible flights, and the routes remain subject to government approval.
Why Secondary Airports Are Getting More Attention
The route map shows how smaller airport growth is becoming a real competitive factor in U.S. leisure travel. Major airports still offer the widest schedules, alliance connectivity and more backup options during disruptions. But for price-sensitive travelers, a smaller airport can make a nonstop trip possible without the time cost of navigating a larger hub.
