San Francisco International Airport has become a more complicated summer travel bet after fresh delay data showed a sharp deterioration in on-time performance, adding a practical planning problem for U.S. travelers using one of the West Coast's most important domestic and international gateways.
The issue is not a single-day weather disruption. It is a capacity squeeze created by two overlapping constraints: a major runway project that removed Runway 1 Right from flight operations and a Federal Aviation Administration change that increased spacing between aircraft landing at SFO. The combination is now visible in traveler-facing alerts and in recent delay analysis, making SFO a connection and schedule-risk airport through much of the peak summer season.
SFO's current travel alert says the FAA recently increased the separation between arriving aircraft and that, together with ongoing runway closures for construction, the airport expects delays of at least 30 minutes on roughly 30% of arriving flights. The airport says the affected runway is expected to reopen in early October 2026 and advises passengers to check directly with their airline for flight-specific details.
Why the delay risk has changed
The runway work began March 30, when SFO closed Runway 1 Right for a six-month repaving and taxiway improvement project. In its original announcement, the airport said the closure was expected to last until October 2, 2026, and described work that includes resurfacing, lighting upgrades, new markings and adjacent taxiway improvements. During the project, SFO said arrivals and departures would use Runways 28 Left and 28 Right, while nearby Runway 1 Left would be used as an additional taxiway rather than for takeoffs and landings.
That construction plan alone was expected to cause some disruption, but the larger summer impact comes from the FAA's landing restriction layered on top of it. Associated Press reporting carried by ABC7 San Francisco said the FAA change reduced SFO's arrival capacity from 54 aircraft per hour to 36, with the airport's close parallel runway layout and complex Bay Area airspace cited as key safety factors. SFO officials at the time estimated that about a quarter of arriving flights could be delayed by 30 minutes or more.
The latest local data suggests the practical impact has continued into June. A San Francisco Chronicle analysis published June 22 found that from April 1 through June 10, after the federal landing order took effect, the average flight delay at SFO was around 20 minutes, compared with about 5 minutes during the same period in 2025. The same analysis found that roughly 41% of all arrivals and departures were delayed by 15 minutes or more, more than double the comparable 2025 share.

For travelers flying nonstop to or from the Bay Area, the change is mostly about building more margin into the day. That does not mean a dawn flight is guaranteed to operate on time. Summer fog, low clouds, thunderstorms elsewhere in the system and aircraft arriving late from the prior day can still disrupt schedules. But when a capacity constraint is structural, earlier departures generally give travelers more recovery options if something slips.
