A new electric aircraft demonstration in Hawaii is turning interisland flying into one of the most important real-world tests for the next phase of regional air travel in the United States. Surf Air Mobility and BETA Technologies announced a six-to-eight-week flight campaign using BETA's ALIA CTOL electric aircraft, with Hawaiian Airlines supporting the program through route insight, feasibility work and local stakeholder engagement.
The trial does not mean electric passenger flights are suddenly replacing today's interisland schedules. The aircraft still has to move through certification and commercial deployment steps before it can carry travelers in regular service. But for Hawaii visitors and travel planners, the test is worth watching because the state's short routes, high dependence on air links and expensive fuel environment make it a natural proving ground for electric regional aviation.

The program launched in Honolulu with Hawaiian Airlines hosting the event at its Charles I. Elliott Maintenance and Cargo Facility at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. BETA's ALIA CTOL aircraft has begun demonstration flights across the islands to collect data on performance, battery use, energy consumption, operating economics, maintenance requirements, ground handling, crew training and charging infrastructure.
Surf Air Mobility brings the Hawaii operating platform through Mokulele Airlines, its commuter-airline subsidiary. Hawaiian Airlines, now part of Alaska Air Group, is not operating the aircraft, but it is supporting the evaluation by sharing experience from Hawaii passenger and cargo routes and participating in feasibility assessments.
