United’s First Starlink Widebody Flight Raises the Bar for Long-Haul Wi-Fi

United Airlines has moved its Starlink Wi-Fi rollout from short-haul and narrowbody flying into the long-haul international market, giving U.S. travelers a clearer sign that high-speed, free onboard internet is becoming a competitive feature on overseas flights rather than a premium novelty.

The airline said United flight 14 from Newark/New York to London Heathrow departed on June 22 aboard a Boeing 777-200 equipped with Starlink, marking the carrier’s first transatlantic widebody customer flight with the satellite internet service. The Wi-Fi is free for MileagePlus members on Starlink-equipped aircraft, and United says customers will be notified before departure when their flight has the service installed.

The milestone matters because widebody aircraft carry many of United’s most time-sensitive travelers: international business passengers, families on long-haul vacations, students, remote workers and travelers connecting through major U.S. hubs. For those passengers, the ability to work, message, stream, shop or manage onward trip details over the ocean can change how they compare airlines and flight times.

What United Has Launched

United said the first Starlink-equipped widebody flight is the beginning of a broader push across its long-haul fleet. The airline expects nearly 60 widebody aircraft to have Starlink this year and says its entire widebody fleet is expected to be outfitted by next summer. More than 400 United aircraft already have Starlink, and the company expects to have close to 1,000 Starlink-equipped aircraft before the end of 2026.

Travel Weekly reported that the widebody debut took place on a Boeing 777-200 between Newark and London Heathrow, and that United expects all of its widebody aircraft to have Starlink by next summer. Those are not luxury use cases; they are increasingly normal expectations for travelers who organize entire trips through mobile apps.

United also said Starlink can support multiple devices, gaming, shopping, travel planning and work collaboration. The important caveat is that travelers should still treat aircraft-specific equipment as variable. A route may be part of the rollout plan, but that does not guarantee every departure on that route will have Starlink immediately.

What U.S. Travelers Should Check Before Booking

The practical takeaway is simple: Starlink can now be part of the decision, but it should not be the only decision. Travelers choosing between similar long-haul fares should check the aircraft type, app notifications, seat map, baggage terms, connection time and airport reliability before paying extra for a flight they assume will have better Wi-Fi.

United says MileagePlus members receive free access on Starlink-equipped flights, so travelers who are not already members should join before departure if they want to use the service without paying. They should also make sure their MileagePlus login works, keep devices charged and download essential boarding passes, hotel confirmations and travel documents before reaching the airport. Even good onboard Wi-Fi should be treated as a convenience, not the only copy of a critical itinerary.

Passengers flying through United’s major hubs should also watch real-time airport conditions. Long-haul flights are more exposed to aircraft swaps, weather, air traffic control constraints and late inbound aircraft. A traveler expecting Starlink on a specific jet could lose that feature if United changes equipment. But United’s first Starlink-equipped widebody flight marks a real shift in the long-haul passenger experience. For U.S. travelers crossing oceans, internet quality is becoming part of the route comparison, not an afterthought once the cabin door closes.
