United Airlines is moving its Starlink Wi-Fi rollout into long-haul international flying, turning inflight connectivity from a domestic convenience into a more important planning factor for U.S. travelers crossing the Atlantic, Pacific and other remote routes.

The airline said on June 22 that United Flight 14 from Newark/New York to London would depart that evening on a Boeing 777-200 equipped with Starlink, marking United's first widebody transatlantic customer flight with the satellite internet service. The flight is also the first of nearly 60 United widebody aircraft expected to receive Starlink this year.

For passengers, the news matters because widebody aircraft are the planes used on many of the routes where reliable inflight internet has historically been weakest: ocean crossings, polar routings, and long sectors where traditional air-to-ground service is unavailable. United says Starlink will be free for MileagePlus members on equipped aircraft, with travelers receiving notice before departure if their plane has the service.

Why the Widebody Milestone Matters

United has already moved aggressively on Starlink across shorter-haul aircraft. The carrier says more than 400 United planes have Starlink today and that it expects close to 1,000 Starlink-equipped aircraft before the end of 2026. The new step is the move into the airline's widebody fleet, where onboard connectivity has a different value for travelers.

On a two-hour domestic flight, fast Wi-Fi can be a welcome perk. On a seven-hour Newark-to-London flight, a 12-hour transpacific flight, or an overnight business itinerary, it can change what passengers can realistically do in the air. It can support work, messaging, trip changes, streaming, gaming, and real-time family coordination during journeys that were previously more disconnected.

United said Starlink-enabled 777-200 aircraft are expected on routes between its hub airports in Newark/New York, Washington, D.C., Houston and San Francisco and international destinations such as London, Frankfurt, Zurich, Paris, Amsterdam, Buenos Aires and Tokyo. That means the rollout is not only a London story. It is a broader change for long-haul travelers using United's major U.S. gateways.

What Travelers Should Expect

The most important caveat is that Starlink is not yet on every United aircraft. Travelers should not assume that a flight has the service simply because it is international or operated by a Boeing 777. United says customers will be notified before travel when their aircraft is Starlink-enabled, and the rollout will continue aircraft by aircraft.

United's June 22 update says the airline expects its entire widebody fleet to have Starlink by next summer. Until then, two passengers flying similar international routes may have very different onboard connectivity experiences depending on aircraft assignment, maintenance swaps, and retrofit timing.

That makes pre-trip checking more important. Passengers flying from Newark Liberty International Airport to London can monitor timing through the EWR live flight board and check arrival planning through the London Heathrow Airport guide or LHR live flight board. Travelers connecting through United's other long-haul hubs can also review Washington Dulles or Houston George Bush Intercontinental before building tight international itineraries.

A Bigger Competitive Signal

United's announcement also raises the bar in the U.S. airline competition over free, usable inflight Wi-Fi. Domestic carriers have increasingly treated connectivity as part of the core passenger product rather than a paid novelty, but long-haul international service is harder to solve because flights cross remote regions and multiple airspace environments.

United is positioning Starlink as part of a wider onboard technology strategy. The airline says it has more than 167,000 seatback screens across nearly 900 aircraft and plans to roughly double that number as it takes new aircraft and retrofits existing ones. Faster connectivity can make those screens and personal devices more useful, especially for passengers who want to switch between entertainment, messaging, shopping, work and travel planning.

The airline says more than 18.6 million passengers have already flown on Starlink-equipped United aircraft since launch, across more than 311,000 flights, with 9.9 million connected devices. United also said Wi-Fi customer satisfaction scores on those aircraft have nearly doubled during that period.

What This Means for Business and Leisure Travelers

For business travelers, the value is obvious: long-haul flights become more useful for collaboration, file access, scheduling and client communication. But the leisure impact is just as important. Families can coordinate arrivals and pickups, travelers can adjust ground transportation after delays, and visitors can make destination plans while still in the air.

That can matter at both ends of a trip. A traveler arriving at Heathrow can use onboard connectivity to confirm a hotel transfer or check rail disruptions before landing. A U.S.-bound passenger can message a pickup driver, recheck a domestic connection, or update plans before reaching Newark, Washington Dulles, Houston or San Francisco.

There are limits. Free Starlink access is tied to MileagePlus membership on equipped United aircraft, so nonmembers should expect to sign up if they want the benefit. Passengers should also remember that inflight internet can still depend on aircraft equipment, operational status, seatback or device settings, and airline policies for certain applications.
