Southwest’s AWS Deal Turns Airline Technology Into a Travel Reliability Story

Southwest Airlines is making airline technology a bigger part of its customer-experience reset, naming Amazon Web Services its preferred cloud provider and setting a 2028 target to move toward a cloud-based, AI-enabled operating architecture. For U.S. travelers, the announcement is not about a new route or a new fare. The June 17 announcement says Southwest plans to shift from a largely on-premises technology environment to a cloud-based, AI- and agent-enabled architecture on AWS by 2028. The airline also said it will expand its use of AI and agent-based capabilities across the business.
